Anthony Jernigan has played basketball since he could walk but it wasn’t until he set foot on the high school floor that every part of his game was scrutinized and criticized. In spite of all this, anyone who has seen the mercurial point guard play can see why he is so highly regarded. He leads a very young East Hartford team, filled with underclassmen, and yet does not defer to any other, playing with his commanding yet humble presence. He is…

Our rankings pages are our most popular, and consequently most controversial, section of our website. Every time we update or release new lists we are inevitably swamped by calls and emails critiquing our evaluations. And as we have always said, ranking players is an inexact science. The only way to truly know who the best prospects are is to see how the rest of their careers materialize after they graduate from high school. So with that in mind we are…

Far too often the average fan doesn’t realize just how good players have to be to play division III basketball. In fact, the opinion that division III is some type of inferior level is probably the most common and hugely inaccurate misconception among local basketball fans. The truth is that often times there is almost no difference between a high level division III program and some scholarship programs. By the same token every good division III program has several players…

Nobles made an impressive statement on Thursday as they advanced to Friday’s final by defeating Rivers in the opening round and then a very tough Holderness team in the semi-finals. The 10:30 a.m. game between Nobles and Rivers kicked off the tournament. Both teams showed some initial rust after their holiday lay-off as they battled through a low scoring first half. But in the second Tucker Halpern took over scoring 16 of his game high 24 points to lead his…

Hillhouse and Weaver both return significant portions of their state championship teams. But with a host of others hoping to call themselves champions, along with the CIAC’s confusing tournament alignments, there are plenty of programs in the hunt this year. Hillhouse: The two time defending state champions have lost a lot since last year, but nonetheless remain the favorites until somebody proves otherwise. With Mike Moore gone to Fordham, the biggest question is who will step up as a go…

Last season was a story book tale for Boston College High School as they won their first division I state title sine 1917. While the Eagles return perhaps the state’s best 1-2 punch in Jake O’Brien and Tim McKinney, along with a very talented supporting cast, they have a lot to replace. The two most notable departures from last season’s team are point guard Chris Hurley and big man Andrew Yanulis. Hurley’s presence might be the hardest to duplicate given…
